World Intellectual Property Day, observed annually on April 26, was established by WIPO in 2000 to raise awareness of the impact of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and designs on daily life. It also celebrates creativity and the contributions of creators and innovators to global economies and societies.

World IP Day 2025 celebrates the theme “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP”, emphasizing how intellectual property supports creativity and innovation in the music industry. While music is mainly linked to copyrights, trademarks, and patents also play a key role in protecting musicians and creators. Let’s explore some iconic music-related trademarks and patents that have shaped the music industry.

Trademarks and Music

In the field of music, trademarks go beyond just logos. Trademarks cover names, symbols, slogans, and even signature elements that distinguish an artist or brand to protect the brand identity of artists, musicians, and companies, allowing them to maintain control over their image, products, and services. These trademarks ensure that only the rightful owner can use their name, logo, or brand in commerce and merchandising. Here are some iconic music-related trademarks that stand out:

Patents and Music

At first glance, “patents and music” might seem like an unlikely pairing, as music is typically linked to copyright protection, as previously noted. However, patents play a crucial role in safeguarding innovations related to music, ranging from new instruments and performance technologies to audio processing tools. From Michael Jackson’s patented anti-gravity shoes (US5255452A) to the pitch detection and correction technology also known as Auto-Tune (US5973252A), there are numerous examples where patents have helped protect groundbreaking ideas in the music industry.

Let’s explore some of the most significant patents related to music and music technology.

1. Phonograph – US227679A

The phonograph by Thomas Alva Edison was the first device that could both record and play back sound. In the patent, tinfoil or another material is used to capture sound by being indented through the movement of a diaphragm, creating what Edison called a phonogram. The same diaphragm can also be used to play back the recorded sound. The phonograph was a foundational predecessor to nearly all modern sound recording and playback technologies.

2. US2089171A– Electrical stringed musical instrument

This invention relates to musical instruments, aiming to provide a simple, improved electric instrument. This improves electric instruments by using string vibrations to alter a magnetic circuit, inducing a current that is amplified into sound, faithfully reproducing the string’s tone without unwanted vibrations. This invention of George D. Beauchamp, a musician-turned-inventor, serves as a predecessor to today’s electric string instruments, using similar magnetic principles to capture and amplify string vibrations.

3. US4656917A– Musical instrument support

A support device for stringed instruments like guitars, banjos, and mandolins securely holds the instrument on the player’s body, freeing both hands for playing. Positioned on the leg, it keeps the instrument perpendicular for full visibility. Originally designed for stringed instruments, this support is now also used in modern instruments like pianos and keyboards, helping players maintain comfort and control during performances or practice.

4. US8952232B2– Circular piano keyboard

The invention describes a circular or semi-circular piano keyboard for comfortable key-play, whether on stage or at home. One embodiment features a fully circular stage keyboard, allowing 360-degree play, while another is a 90-degree digital piano for corner placement. Wearable versions are also disclosed, such as a curved “keytar,” which is worn on the shoulder with a strap like a guitar, combining keyboard and guitar elements with adjustable design features. This technology is now used by several artists in live performances.

5. US10380983B2– Machine learning to generate music from text

This invention describes a computer system that generates music from text using machine learning. It extracts structural features from the input text and uses a deep neural network trained on lyrics and their corresponding music to create musical embeddings. These, combined with the text structure, are fed into an audio generation model to produce a musical composition. This invention is a clear example of how AI is set to shape the future of the music industry, opening new possibilities for creativity and music production.
